Fantasy/Paranormal

The Portal Between by Sarah Barnard ~ Review by QBR fan Catrina Taylor I picked this book up as something new to read. I put it down because my kids needed to eat. Once the meal was over, I couldn't rip myself from the pages within. I did get back to my life but only AFTER I finished reading this book. I love this book and I'm now a fan of the author.

Upgrade by Stephen Hise ~ Review by QBR fan Alex

Nothing will hook me to a book faster than a hint that the plot is based on some interesting psychological aspect. I was not disappointed. The reader will find characters that could be described as having loose morals, though they do not seem to produce any negative reaction as the surrounding society seems to adapt to them… or vice-versa. I ...like the way Stephen Hise plays with words, even walking a thin line from a male writer's stand: "A man as handsome as that would never have been interested in her, no matter how smart and good she was." In the end, even Shakespeare gets a cameo role, which I found quite fitting. This is a story that does not need an Upgrade.

What Luck by Alex Knight ~ Reviewed by QBR fan Faith

Now, normally I hate vampire books and films - but on reading the `book blurb' I thought this one was a little different. Who would have believed that Alex Knight could have turned the Vampire Theme on its head and come up with an entirely new perspective on blood-suckers? Indeed we have a book where the vampires have morals, feelings other than where their next meal is coming from and all written with a tongue-in-cheek tone interspersed with some funny moments. Very nicely done, good in-depth plot with lots of characters and some fairly gory parts for those that need it. Well worth reading.

Second Chances by Dannye Williamsen ~ Reviewed by QBR

This paranormal romance painted a very unique picture of good vs. evil. Freddie, a seemingly normal financial analyst, is suddenly being haunted and tormented by a dark presence with unexplained intentions. The author does a nice job of creating this villain from the beginning of his existence and actually has the reader torn between hate and pity for him. Good vs. Evil progresses the story and in the end you’ll find yourself with a new understanding of that very concept. My interest was kept throughout this book, following Freddie trying to uncover the mystery and wondering what would happen next.

Wonderful book! Part coming-of-age, part fantasy, this magical book was written in prose that reads like poetry. My 12 year old loved it. The author has recently published a sequel and I'm looking forward to it.
